The FIC supports three fully-equipped distance learning classrooms in the Engineering Teaching Center (ETC) available to all engineering professors. Lectures can be streamed live and captured for later review. The FIC’s experienced distance learning team runs the controls for each presentation to assure top quality output for both local and remote students. All three rooms are videoconferencing capable.
Updated over the 2004-2005 winter break, this state-of-the-art classroom seats 40 students. Classroom features include a remote Crestron control system, an electronic whiteboard, remotely controlled cameras, a wireless lapel microphone for the instructor, omni-directional overhead microphones for students, and a combination DVD/VCR player. ETC 5.148 is a dedicated distance learning classroom with scheduling controlled by the FIC. Contact Jack Prather (jack.prather@engr.utexas.edu or 512-232-1531) to inquire about scheduling. |

These general purpose classrooms were updated and equipped with distance learning facilities in 2003 with a grant from the Ford Motor Company. In addition to a standard multimedia teaching console, each room is equipped with remotely controlled cameras and microphones. The larger room, ETC 2.136, which has a seating capacity of 100, also has a large plasma monitor so students at the back of the room are guaranteed clear viewing.
Because ETC 2.132 and 2.136 are general purpose classrooms, scheduling must follow standard University procedures. For more information, contact Jack Prather (jack.prather@engr.utexas.eduor 512-232-1531). |
| Established in 2001 with a grant from HP, the FIC Studio combines many functions. Frequently used as a meeting space, FIC staff members collaborate with faculty and with each other in the FIC Studio.
The central area has a seating appropriate for working meetings, as well as four computer stations, which are often used when individuals request Blackboard training. Two of the computer stations have self-service scanners. These facilities are available for any engineering faculty members to use. | ![]() |
The FIC Studio’s presentation room is equipped with all the components of a standard multimedia teaching console, electronic whiteboard, wireless mouse, and eight student computer stations. The room accommodates an audience of 12. A self-service Tandberg 6000 videoconference system is also housed in the FIC Studio and is integrated with the presentation system. To schedule a videoconference in the FIC Studio, contact Jack Prather (jack.prather@engr.utexas.edu or 512-232-1531). To take a Quicktime VR tour of the FIC Studio:

With new technologies emerging at an ever-increasing pace, it can be daunting to stay abreast of new developments and integrate them effectively into the classroom. The FIC works closely with the College’s IT Group to evaluate promising classroom technologies and trends, and to establish appropriate adoption plans. As part of a recent initiative, called Classroom 2010, the FIC and ITG have hosted meetings to receive input from faculty on their needs and desires regarding the physical and technological features of classrooms.
